We all love our dogs, but one thing that some of the have that is not so lovable is biting. Dogs bite for several different reasons. They may be scared, they may have an aggressive personality, they may be in pain, teething, bored or even ignorant to the fact that they should not bite.

When they are just young pups it is natural for them to bite as they are teething, but when they are done teething they should not have the need to do this anymore. They should be taught during this time that it is an unacceptable behavior. They should also be given lots of “chew toys” to chew on early in the life. If they continue to bite as they are growing and getting away from teething do not play. Simply stop playtime with your dog and walk away. This will be very disappointing for him, but after a few times he will get the hint that having a good time and biting do not mix.

If your puppy is not one to pick up on this clue then you need to direct a firmer, more concrete approach. If your puppy is biting and you are sure it is not his teeth then crate him at the first sign of nipping. Do not crate for more than a few minutes and then let him back out. Repeat this pattern until it sinks in.

You can also tell your dog that one simple word, “no” and either point your finger at him or give him a light tap with your hand. It should be enough to startle him. Be very careful though, as you do not want to hurt him. A timid dog or one that has been scolded harshly will only tend to become more aggressive out of fear.

If your dog is older and still biting you need to show him that you are in control, as he is a little confused about his role in the family. You need to teach him to be a patient and show him that you are the “master” of the house. Discipline him by saying no to such things as jumping up on you and getting up on the couch. You should teach him commands, such as “stay” and “sit”.

How you play with your dog can also be a reason why he bites. If you play roughly or tease your dog he will become aggravated. Playing tug of war with your dog is also very much a form of aggravation. Be good to your dog. Keep him safe and teach him well. After all, he is probably your most devoted and very best friend.
